An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your device, with no physical card to swap. For travellers, that means activating a local data plan with a quick QR scan instead of hunting for a SIM kiosk at the airport.

Most phones released since 2018 support eSIM, including iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, every Google Pixel from the Pixel 3 onwards, and recent flagships from Huawei, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Sony and Motorola. iPhone 14 and later sold in the US are eSIM-only, with no physical SIM tray at all.

Even if your device supports eSIM, it must also be carrier-unlocked to install a travel eSIM. If you bought your phone outright or finished your contract, you’re likely fine. If you’re still on a financed plan, contact your carrier first to confirm.

Do all iPhones support eSIM?

iPhone XS, XR and newer support eSIM globally. iPhone 14 and later sold in the US are eSIM-only with no physical SIM tray. Older iPhones (iPhone 8 and earlier) do not support eSIM.

Is my phone unlocked for eSIM?

Even if your phone supports eSIM, it must be carrier-unlocked to use a third-party travel eSIM. Contact your carrier to confirm your device is unlocked before purchasing.

Can I use eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time?

Yes. Most modern phones support Dual SIM. You can keep your home number on the physical SIM and use a travel eSIM for data abroad. Some newer iPhones (US models) are eSIM-only and support multiple eSIMs simultaneously instead.
